Pill bugs and Sow bugs, also known
as rollie pollies, because of their ability to roll
up in a tight ball, can be a real nuisance to homeowners.
Both bugs feed on decaying plant material and
unless very numerous will do very little damage. We
will get calls from homeowners who say hundreds of
these guys showed up almost overnight. There are few
other insects that eat these guys due to a bad secretion
from their glands that makes them very distasteful.
We get more calls on Pill Bugs in very wet seasons,
when it gets hot they take refuge in the soil to wait
until the rains come back. A simple residual pesticide
takes care of these guys.
